A neurotologist is a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the ear. What sets these specialists apart from other ear, nose and throat doctors is that neurotologists are trained to operate within the skull on the parts of the brain and nervous system related to hearing and balance.
Neurotologists perform cochlear implantation surgery. In addition, the most common conditions they treat include:
- Acoustic Neuromas
- Perforated Tympanic Membranes
- Cholesteatomas
- Otosclerosis
- Glomus Tumors
What Credentials Do Neurotologists Have?
Neurotologists complete a 5 year residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ENT) followed by a 2 year fellowship in Neurotology/Skull Base Surgery
All neurotologists must be certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, which requires passing a written and oral examination.
